How U.S. elections are scheduled

By federal law, general elections for Congress and the presidency are held on the same day nationwide: the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. That falls between November 2 and November 8. Even-numbered years carry the big federal elections: the presidency every fourth year, and the “midterm” elections (the entire U.S. House and a third of the Senate) in between. Odd-numbered years are quieter: a few states, notably Virginia and New Jersey, elect their governors, alongside many state and local contests.
